Reading Assignment - Class #23

Please read mitzvot 326 – 335 and 339 – 341 about shmittah and yovel.  You may want to review mitzvah #84 before you proceed.  Please consider the following questions:

Mitzvah #339:

1.        What does this mitzvah prohibit according to Rambam?  Why is that interpretation difficult?  What does this mitzvah prohibit according to Ramban?

2.      What happens if someone sells rural land in Israel with a provision that the sale should survive yovel?  What happens if someone makes a loan on condition that the borrower will pay even if shmittah intervenes?  Why the difference?

3.      Distinguish inherited land, “s’dot ahuzah,” from purchased land, “s’dot mikneh.”  (See pages 415/416 in the Feldheim translation.)

4.      Under what conditions can the seller of s’dot ahuzah redeem the sold land?

Mitzvah #340:

1.       How do we determine whether a city is considered a walled city or an unwalled city?

2.      Within a city, what land follows the rules for cities and what land follows the rules for rural land?

3.      How do the rules for houses in walled cities differ from the rules for rural land?  How do the rules for houses in unwalled cities differ from the rules for rural land?  Consider whether those houses can be redeemed the same way as rural land, and whether those houses revert to the original owner in yovel.
