Please consider what to do in the following cases.  If you can, try to articulate and defend several different answers to some or all of these cases:

1.        You are in an isolated place and someone with a gun starts shooting at you.  What if you have a gun?  What if you don’t?  What if you know the person is mentally ill?

2.      You enter an isolated place and find one person shooting a gun at another person.  What if you have a gun?  What if you don’t?

3.      You enter an isolated place to find one person, holding a gun, dead on the floor, and another person, alive and holding a gun.

4.      You enter an isolated place and find one person pointing a gun at someone else.  What if you have a gun?  What if you don’t?

5.      You enter an isolated place and find two people having an argument.  One has his hand in his bulging pocket and is threatening to kill the other person.

6.      Consider the prior cases again, if it turns out that the gun is a toy.

7.      You are on a busy street corner and someone with a gun starts shooting at you.  What if you have a gun?  What if you don’t?

8.      You turn the corner on a busy intersection to find someone with a gun shooting at someone else.  What if you have a gun?  What if you don’t?

9.      You enter an isolated place and find two people shooting guns at each other.  What if one of them is a known violent criminal?  What if you know nothing about either of them?

10.   You are in an isolated place with someone who is threatening you with a gun.  What if that person is mentally ill?  What if that person is a young child?

11.    You are a skilled marksman.  You are looking through your neighbor’s window when you see someone enter with a gun.  What if the gunman does not shoot?  What if the gunman starts shooting?

12.   You are a skilled marksman.  Looking through your neighbor’s window you see three people enter and start shooting at you neighbor.

13.   You are spending the evening at a bar when two patrons, neither fully sober, get into an argument that escalates into a fist fight.  A knife fight.  A gun fight.

14.   You enter a situation where one person is aiming a gun at the other person, who says, “Go ahead and shoot me.”

15.   You are a skilled marksman. You are looking through a neighbor’s window and see a rape in progress.  Does it matter whether it is a homosexual rape or a heterosexual rape?

16.   An armed robber enters your home. Your neighbor’s home.

17.   An unarmed robber enters your home.  Your neighbor’s home.

18.   A robber enters your home, and you do not know whether or not the robber is armed.

19.   You are a skilled marksman.  Looking through your neighbor’s window you see someone with a knife threatening to cut off your neighbor’s ear.

20.  You are in a crowded theatre when someone starts shooting.  You have a gun.  You think you have identified the shooter, and you shoot and kill that person.  It turns out that the person you shot was not the original shooter but was another potential rescuer.  Have you committed murder?  What if the person you killed was another movie patron who was unarmed?
